The port of Mahon is the second largest natural port in Europe, with a length of about 6 kilometres from the mouth to the end of the port. The port of Mahon has everything needed to fascinate visitors with calm waters and green shores, dotted with houses, villas and chalets on the north coast and the city of Mahon in the south coast, offering breathtaking views of landscapes of great beauty.
Considered the best natural strategic enclave in the Mediterranean Sea, the port of Mahon was conquered and reconquered by the major European nations during the last 2000 years. Its geographical configuration was capable of protecting the largest fleet of the time from the north wind, the most violent of which affect the western Mediterranean.

All these achievements have left a legacy of military buildings that turn the port of Mahon in an iconic tourist attraction for all visitors. During the day, the port offers the possibility of peaceful walks along the seafront; right by the water's edge next to the boats moored at their docks, or admire its beauty from above from one of the lookouts on along its route.
You can also make boat trips with guided explanations of places and historical events experienced by the port and the island of Menorca, overlooking the natural settings of the port and how the various dominations buildings left as a footprint on the island. Within the port are 4 blocks, all used at one time or another in the history for various purposes.
First block is the "Llatzaret” Island, the largest in area, which was used as a isolation place of people with infectious diseases during the 19th century, no longer have this function in the early twentieth century. He currently serves as the headquarters of symposia and scientific meetings, in addition to special attractions for visitors.
Just in front of the village of Es Castell we can find the second island, the “Isla del Rey”. This island is named in honor of King Alfonso III, who conquered Menorca in 1287. During the English rule of 17th century a military hospital was built. It was in operation until mid-twentieth century. Currently the association “Amics de l’Illa de l'Hospital” is recovering the island and its buildings.
The third island is the “Isla Pinto”, the closest to the end of the port. It is an ancient 18th century naval base, which is now obsolete.
And the smallest of the islands, located very close to the “Llatzaret” Island is the “Isla de la Cuarentena” (Quarantine Island), a former leper port that also had military functions.

On the north bank of the Port of Mahon there is the Golden Farm, an English style summer house, where it is said that Admiral Lord Nelson lived an intense affair with Lady Hamilton.
Following on the north coast at the mouth of the harbor, there is the Fortress of La Mola, a military fortress built during the reign of Elizabeth II, but never used. Today you can visit La Mola as a touristic point of interest.
In the evening enjoy the great cuisine of the Port of Mahon, with over 50 restaurants, bars, cafes, pubs and breweries. Also you can find gift and craft shops and a street market at night, all accompanied by the beautiful views of the yachts and sailboats moored to the docks. We also recommend visiting Calas Fonts, the small port of Es Castell that is also located within the port of Mahon, where you can find good restaurants and a beautiful night market.
